Dr. Brent is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. He is Assistant Psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he serves as attending psychiatrist at the Freedom Trail Clinic, which focuses on providing psychiatric care to individuals with psychotic-spectrum disorders.
Dr. Brent completed his psychiatric training at Harvard Longwood Psychiatry, his psychoanalytic training at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, and his Master of Science in Developmental Psychology at University College of London.
Over the last ten years, Dr. Brent has divided his time between clinical psychiatry and functional MRI research on the neurobiological basis of aberrant self-experience in people with schizophrenia.
He is first author of eleven papers and book chapters focused on the neural basis and/or approach to treatment of impairments of self and other understanding in schizophrenia.
In collaboration with Dr. Peter Fonagy, Dr. Brent has developed a novel psychotherapeutic treatment model, involving the adaptation of mentalization-based treatment to address social deficits in schizophrenia.
