Dr. Schiff did his Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Boston Hospital for Women (now Brigham and Women's Hospital) and a Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at the same institution. He was the Director of Reproductive Endocrinology at Brigham and Women's Hospital before being selected to head the Vincent Obstetrics and Gynecology Service at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1988. He also became the Joe Vincent Meigs Professor of Gynecology at Harvard Medical School at the same time.

He is past President of the North American Menopause Society and Editor-in-Chief of its journal, Menopause. In addition, he chairs the Medical Advisory Board for Pause, the consumer magazine for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
