Dr. Kabrhel's research focuses on the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE). He collaborates nationally with prominent researchers in emergency medicine, cardiology, pulmonology and epidemiology.

His work is funded by the NIH and private foundations. In 2003, he helped found the Pulmonary Embolism Research Consortium (PERC), an ongoing collaboration between PE researchers in the emergency medicine.

This NIH-funded collaboration compiled the largest prospective database of emergency department patients evaluated for PE, and derived and validated the "PERC Rule." This rule has now been incorporated into clinical practice guidelines, such as those of the American College of Emergency Physicians, and is used internationally.

He is currently the principal investigator for several ongoing prospective clinical studies related to risk stratification and evidence-based imaging of patients with PE. Dr. Kabrhel also coordinates VTE research for the two Nurse's Health Studies (Channing Lab/Brigham and Women's Hospital) and Health Professionals Follow Up Study (Harvard School of Public Health).

This work was funded by grants from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the National Institute for Aging. Dr. Kabrhl's work has been published in such journals as Academic Emergency Medicine, Annals of Emergency Medicine, Archives of Internal Medicine, British Medical Journal (BMJ), Chest, and Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
