As an academic physician I lead research and educational projects at MGH and Harvard Medical School with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of health care we deliver in the US and abroad to culturally diverse patient populations. Immigrants, minorities, patients with language barriers, and those with limited or no insurance receive substandard care as documented in hundreds of studies. My work is focused on identifying, understanding, and most importantly taking action to reduce or eliminate these disparities in health care.
In order to expand the impact of our educational work in cross-cultural care, my partners and I developed Quality Interactions, a business model for creating culturally competent health care organizations through education, leadership, and systems change. We have now trained over 140,000 doctors, nurses, case managers, medical technicians, receptionists and others to be more skilled at communicating and working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Design of interactive, educational programs via e-learning
- Facilitation of group education and training, particularly in the area of cultural competence and diversity
