In addition to her clinical practice which focuses on both benign and malignant thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal disease, Dr. Cunningham leads a health-services research laboratory.  Her primary research focus has been on defining the clinical and economic impact of interventions in endocrine diseases. She is funded through an NIH-NCI R37 (R01-type, early-stage investigator merit award) utilizing microsimulation modeling of thyroid nodules and cancer to compare standard versus alternate management strategies on health and economic outcomes.  The focus of her American Cancer Society Research Scholar Grant is in the development of a health-related quality of life insturment useful for comparative effectiveness of patients with thyroid cancer.
