Dr. Joseph Greer is the Co-Director of the Cancer Outcomes Research & Education Program and a research scientist in the Center for Psychiatric Oncology & Behavioral Sciences at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center. Dr. Greer received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2003 and completed his postdoctoral fellowship in Behavioral Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Greer's clinical work focuses on the delivery of cognitive-behavioral therapy to help patients and their families cope with cancer. In addition, he collaborates with a multidisciplinary research team of oncologists, nurses, palliative care clinicians, psychiatrists, and psychologists to develop and test supportive care interventions aimed at improving quality of life, mood, and quality of care for patients with cancer. As the principal and co-investigator on a variety of federally and privately-funded projects, Dr. Greer is studying the application of cognitive-behavioral therapy to treat anxiety in patients with metastatic cancer; the development of digital health interventions to help patients with cancer cope with symptoms and adhere to their prescribed treatments; and the benefits of early palliative care integrated with standard oncology care. Dr. Greer has published over 170 professional papers, reviews, chapters, and commentaries. He also provides clinical supervision and mentorship for clinical psychology trainees.
