Research Narrative
Dr. Grinspoon practices as a primary care physician and a medical cannabis specialist at an inner-city clinic in Boston and is on staff at Massachusetts General Hospital. He teaches medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is the author of the recent popular book, 'Seeing Through the Smoke: A Cannabis Specialist Untanges the Truth About Marijuana' as well as the groundbreaking memoir, 'Free Refills: A Doctor Confronts His Addiction'. He spent two years as an Associate Director for the Physician Health Service, part of the Massachusetts Medical Society, working with physicians who suffer from substance use disorders and other mental health conditions. Dr. Grinspoon is a certified physician wellness coach, with a private practice in coaching, as well as a TedX Speaker. He is a board member of the group, 'Doctors For Cannabis Regulation' and an advistor to the Parabola Center which works towards social justice in the cannabis industry.
Dr. Grinspoon graduated with honors in philosophy from Swarthmore College and then, before medical school, he spent five years as a Campaign Director at Greenpeace, working on the clean energy campaigns. He attended medical school at Boston University School of Medicine, where he graduated with honors. His internship and residency were in Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School. His senior presentation, back in 2000, was on, 'The Medicinal Benefits of Cannabis.' He is a national media figure who regularly comments on cannabis, addiction, psychedelics and physician health.
