Maurizio Cereda, MD is Associate Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School and a physician-scientist in the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.

His research seeks to determine the physiological mechanisms underlying respiratory failure by studying how the lung operates as an integrated physical and biological system. His laboratory develops and applies quantitative imaging and physiological monitoring techniques to characterize regional ventilation, perfusion, and mechanics, investigate the mechanisms of lung injury, and understand how the respiratory system responds to therapeutic interventions. The long-term goal of this work is to improve the assessment of organ performance and enable more rational, physiology-guided approaches to the treatment of critically ill patients.
