Research Narrative
My research focuses on non-coding RNAs as tools for understanding and treating cardiovascular disease. During my PhD at the CNR in Naples, I studied long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in ovarian cancer, before moving into the cardiovascular field for my postdoctoral training at the Cardiovascular Research Center, MGH/HMS. There, supported by an American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellowship, I used patient-derived samples to identify RNA and protein biomarkers in heart failure, and developed tissue-specific EV-based liquid biopsy approaches to non-invasively monitor myocardial disease in plasma — optimizing and leveraging EV long-RNA profiling using next-generation sequencing and precise quantitative estimation using qRT-PCR and dPCR. In parallel, I worked on modified siRNA therapeutics validated in preclinical models of CVD including heart-on-chip and mouse models, bridging RNA biology with therapeutic development.
My research program focuses on two connected goals: expanding tissue-specific EV-based liquid biopsy across accessible biofluids such as plasma and saliva for cardiac disease monitoring, and developing RNA therapeutics to treat adverse cardiac remodeling. Both directions are driven by patient-sample-based discovery and tested in mouse and heart-on-chip models.
