Research Narrative
Sanjula Dhillon Singh, MD, PhD, MSc (Oxon)
Instructor in Neurology, Harvard Medical School
Principal Investigator, Brain Care Labs
Massachusetts General Hospital
Dr. Sanjula Dhillon Singh is a physician–scientist and Oxford-trained epidemiologist whose work focuses on the prevention of age-related brain diseases, including stroke, dementia, and late-life depression. Her research integrates clinical neurology, epidemiology, behavioral science, and population health to develop scalable, evidence-based strategies for long-term brain health.
At Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Singh leads a research program within Brain Care Labs dedicated to improving modifiable risk factor control and advancing health equity in populations at high risk for brain disease. Her work emphasizes the translation of scientific evidence into practical tools and interventions that can be implemented at scale.
Dr. Singh is a co-developer of the Brain Care Score (BCS), a validated framework designed to quantify and monitor brain health risk across the lifespan. She has led multiple studies validating the BCS and advancing its application as a unifying model for the shared prevention of stroke, dementia, and depression.
Dr. Singh serves as Site Principal Investigator at Massachusetts General Hospital for three studies focused on secondary prevention in stroke survivors through blood pressure control:
-
REACH-ICH (NIH R01NS093870): Investigating the biological and social determinants of poor outcomes in hemorrhagic stroke survivors from historically marginalized communities.
-
Bugher Foundation Center for Excellence in Brain Health (AHA) – Clinical Project: Studying biological and social determinants of early outcomes in stroke survivors.
-
Heitman Foundation Young Investigator Award – Randomized Clinical Trial: Evaluating a novel behavioral intervention to improve blood pressure medication adherence and reduce risk of recurrent stroke, dementia, and depression.
Her research has been published in leading journals including The Lancet Neurology, Neurology, Stroke, and Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, and has been featured in major national and international media outlets including The New York Times, CNN, NPR, and The Boston Globe.
Dr. Singh is an internationally invited speaker and serves on the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Brain Health Science Task Force, contributing to national efforts to advance brain health science and prevention strategies.
She is currently enrolled in the full-time MBA program at Columbia Business School (Class of 2027), with a focus on translating scientific discovery into scalable health innovation.
Her long-term vision is to transform the global approach to brain disease prevention through the development and rigorous evaluation of effective, equitable, and scalable interventions grounded in behavioral science.
