Borek obtained his M.D. degree (2010) from University of Leipzig – Medical School, Leipzig, Germany. After that he joined the residency program in the diagnostic and interventional radiology department at the heart centre in Leipzig under supervision of Dr. Lehmkuhl and Prof. Gutberlet.

Besides clinical tasks as a resident, Borek focused on cardiovascular imaging, particularly computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging of the heart. In 2012 he accomplished his doctoral thesis in the field of CT imaging prior to trans-catheter aortic valve imaging (magna cum laude).

In 2015 he received a grant from the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft - DFG) and in 2016, he began a postdoctoral position with Prof. Udo Hoffmann at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, where he studies CT imaging of coronary arteries.
