Jonathan Michael Winograd, M.D., is a plastic surgeon on the consulting staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston. He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1992 and is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in plastic surgery and hand surgery.
Dr. Winograd is the director of hand surgery for the division of plastic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and is an expert in the field of hand surgery and microsurgery, with a particular interest, both clinical and basic research, in peripheral nerve reconstruction.
Dr. Winograd is the leader of the recipient team in the hand transplantation program. He successfully performed the first hand transplant at Massachusetts General Hospital on October 7, 2012 with his co-surgeon, Curtis L. Cetrulo Jr., M.D., the leader of the donor team. He has been an integral leader in the surgical planning aspects of the program, including design of the surgical technique required to compensate for the recipient’s lack of normal venous anatomy in the forearm secondary to its destruction from burn injury and grafting.
