Before coming to Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr Thrall served as Chairman of Radiology at the Henry Ford Hospital between 1983 and 1988 where he also served as a physician trustee and held the position of vice-chairman of the Board of Governors of the Henry Ford Medical Staff.

Dr. Thrall received his M.D. Degree from the University of Michigan in 1968 and trained in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C. Dr. Thrall returned to the University of Michigan in 1975 and was promoted to Professor in 1981.

Dr Thrall served as President of the American Roentgen Ray Society and as Chairman of the Board of Chancellors and President of the American College of Radiology. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Research and Education Foundation of the Radiological Society of North America, the Board of Directors of the Academy of Radiology Research, the Executive Council of the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Board of Trustees of the Society of Nuclear Medicine, the Board of Councilors of the Society of Chiefs of Academic Radiology Departments and the Board of Chancellors of the American College of Radiology.

Dr Thrall is a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies of the United States and has received the Gold Medals of the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Radiological Society of North America and the Association of University Radiologists.

Internationally, Dr Thrall has served on the Board of Directors of the International Society of Radiology and currently serves on the Executive Board of the International Society for Strategic Studies in Radiology.

Dr Thrall is an Honorary Member of the French Society of Radiology and the European Society of Radiology and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists of the United Kingdom. He has received the Tessla Medal from the Royal College of Radiologists and the Beclere Medal from the International Society of Radiology.

Dr Thrall is an author of over 400 scientific publications and reviews and is the founder and Editor of the Requisites in Radiology textbook series.
