Dr. Patel's research interests focus on the endovascular treatment of stroke, carotid and intra-arterial stents, cerebral aneurysm treatment, aneurysm morphology and flow dynamics, and hemorrhagic stroke treatment.

He is involved in multiple National Institutes of Health (NIH) and industry sponsored multi-center studies that investigate treatments related to ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, new devices and new techniques.

He was an early investigator in the initial post-market evaluation of carotid artery stenting (SAPPHIRE) and in the first study on the endovascular treatment of intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (SAMMPRIS).

Some of his active studies include: the Penumbra Liberty trial investigating a new stent device for the treatment of cerebral aneurysms and an NIH trial site studying the surgical treatment of cerebral hemorrhage.

He also actively maintains a clinical database evaluating clinical outcomes and treatments. This database has led to multiple peer reviewed publications.
